Tunisia is one of the world's great olive oil producers. The ambition now is to sell under its own name.
Tunisia ranks among the largest olive oil producers on earth, yet much of its output has long left the country in bulk, blended and bottled elsewhere under other flags. The value, and the recognition, accrued abroad. A growing group of producers wants to change that.
The strategy is to move up the chain: bottling at home, building Tunisian brands, and chasing the premium European shelves where extra virgin oil with a story commands a higher price. Good harvests and rising global demand give them an opening.
The obstacles are familiar, finance, marketing reach, and the patience to build a name. But olive oil is a rare case where Tunisia has both the raw quality and the heritage to compete at the top. Capturing more of that value at home would matter well beyond the groves.
